Experience the night sky

North Yorkshire boasts two renowned National Parks, Yorkshire Dales National Park and North York Moors National Park, with both designated as International Dark Sky Reserves. These parks offer numerous designated viewing spots where you can marvel at the wonders of the universe. With clear night skies, you can witness constellations, planets, and even the Milky Way stretching across the horizon.

Immerse yourself in Dalby Forest Stargazing Events, learn to identify constellations and pick up expert tips on photographing the night sky - a must for budding astronomers and night-sky dreamers.

Stargazing tips

The key to great stargazing? Darkness. Look for locations away from the glare of lights and busy roads. You don’t need to trek into the wilderness, just find a place with minimal artificial lighting and a wide, unobstructed view of the sky. Our Dark Sky discovery sites are perfect.

Clear skies are a must. Before heading out, check a reliable weather app to ensure cloud cover won’t spoil your plans. For an extra treat, time your outing with a meteor shower or, if you are lucky, a chance of seeing the Northern Lights!

Stargazing is a slow, peaceful activity, and your eyes need time to adjust to the dark. You might be outside for a while, so layer up! Bring blankets, warm drinks, and easy-to-grab snacks. A dim red torch is perfect for navigating without ruining your night vision.
