- Water Reservoirs
North Yorkshire is home to several reservoirs that offer beautiful walking routes through stunning scenery. Set in breathtaking countryside, be it rugged open moorland which is even more spectacular in August when the heather blooms and bathes the countryside in purple hues, or farmland with sheep and cows grazing, each reservoir has its own characteristics.
All the reservoirs in North Yorkshire have walking trails around them and whether you walk an easy-going route around the water’s edge or take on a more challenging trail heading away from the water and on to the surrounding countryside, you will take in stunning views, long abandoned villages, and the many bird, insect and animal species that can be found in and around the water and in the surrounding habitat. Some of the wildlife you may see includes brown trout, grayling and common toads as well as curlews, black grouse and hen harriers.
Due to the variety of animal and plant species as well as flora and fauna that can be found in and around the water, some of our reservoirs are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Many of the reservoirs in North Yorkshire and their adjacent car parks have been designated as Dark Sky Discovery Sites with a ‘Milky Way’ rating where the galaxies can be seen with the naked eye.
Anglers are welcome at some of the reservoirs with some exceptional fly-fishing, spinning and course fishing. Day and season tickets can be purchased on site.
