North Yorkshire has a long history of monasticism, with abbeys being established in the county as early as the 7th century. Although nearly all the abbeys were destroyed in the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, you can still walk in the footsteps of the monks, friars and nuns, and soak in the atmosphere of these beautiful ruins which are now among some of the best-preserved ruins England.
