Easby Abbey

Easby Abbey is a 12th century abbey situated near Richmond in North Yorkshire. Explore the ruins and immerse yourself in monastic history. The site is managed by English Heritage and admission is free.

About Easby Abbey

The 12th century Easby Abbey was once home to an order of Premonstratensian monks known as 'white canons' due to their white robes and it is one of the best perserved monasteries of this order. Many artists have sketched and painted the ruins including JMW Turner.

Loacted near the River Swale, the ruins include the canon's dormitory, gatehouse and refectory. St Agatha's Church which predates the abbey and sits within the site has rare wall paintings from the 13th century. The church is still in use and is open to visitors.

From March to November volunteer guides take visitors on guided tours of the site.

The site is open 10am-6pm, daily from the end of March to October and 10am-4pm in winter.

There is a 2 mile walk from Easby Abbey to Richmond , part of which is along the disused railway line.

There is a small car park next to the abbey with a suggested donation of £1.00 or £2.00 towards the upkeep of St Agatha's Church.

The site is maintained by English Heritage and admission is free. Dogs on leads are welcome.
