Moors Villages

Discover the charm of Thornton-le-Dale, where you'll find quaint thatched cottages, a serene stream, cosy cafés, and a delightful chocolate shop.

Next, head to Hutton-le-Hole, famous for its beautiful stone cottages and the open-air Ryedale Folk Museum. Here, you can wander through historic buildings, delve into 4,000 years of North York Moors history, and meet farmyard animals. History buffs will love the Edge of Empire trail at the nearby Cawthorn Roman Camps.

Lealholm is a picturesque riverside village with charming stepping stones over the River Esk. Visit the Poet’s Cottage Shrub Nursery, located at the home of 19th-century dialect poet John Castillo. Don't miss the quirky Museum of Victorian Science in the hillside village of Glaisdale, where the stone-built packhorse Beggar’s Bridge offers a scenic viewpoint. This village is a favourite among hikers on the Coast to Coast National Trail, which passes through it. Littlebeck, also on the National Trail, is known for the intriguing Hermitage folly and the seasonal Falling Foss waterfall and tearoom.

Goathland, famous for its role as Aidensfield in the ITV drama Heartbeat, also served as Hogsmeade station in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Enjoy a pleasant walk along the old railway line to Yorkshire's smallest pub at Beck Hole, or marvel at the stunning vertical drop of Mallyan Spout waterfall. Take a nostalgic ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s steam and diesel trains, or stroll along the 3.5-mile Rail Trail, tracing Stephenson’s original line to Goathland. Explore local history displays at St Matthew’s Church and learn about the history of ironstone, first discovered here in 1836.

A cottage with a thatched roof sits amongst a garden filled with colourful flowers and hanging baskets with small trimmed hedge to the front of a clean grey footpath.
