Stokesley & Great Ayton

Stokesley is a picturesque market town located just a stone’s throw from the North York Moors National Park. With its elegant Georgian and Victorian architecture, cobbled streets, and scenic countryside, it offers a delightful blend of nature and local charm.

Stokesley is home to several notable buildings, including the 12th century Church of St Peter and St Paul, which features stained glass windows and woodwork carved by the Mouseman of Kilburn. The town also boasts a Manor House, once used as a World War I hospital, while the high street is lined with independent shops, cafes, and restaurants. Each September, the county show draws thousands of visitors who come to enjoy the livestock displays and browse local produce and handcrafted gifts.

A short drive from Stokesley brings you to the pretty village of Great Ayton, nestled on the banks of the River Leven. Set at the foot of the Cleveland Hills and on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, the village is a great place to base yourself for walks in the area exploring stunning moorland.

Great Ayton is best known for being the childhood home of renowned explorer Captain James Cook. The village museum, housed in his former school, is dedicated to the early education and upbringing of young James.  While exploring the village, why not take a moment in the memorial garden, a peaceful spot on the former site of the Cook family home?

At the heart of the village, High Green, surrounded by traditional stone cottages and historic buildings, is a great picnic spot, as well as home to a statue of Captain Cook, which faces east towards Stathes – the fishing village where he lived as an apprentice.
