Grassington and Upper Wharfedale

Situated above the River Wharfe, Grassington is the vibrant heart of Upper Wharfedale, surrounded by rolling hills and dramatic moorland. This charming village is a perfect base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales, with its cobbled square lined with traditional pubs, independent shops, and galleries.

Grassington has gained fame as the filming location for ‘Darrowby’ in the beloved TV adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small, adding a touch of literary magic to its streets.

Visitors can enjoy scenic walks along the riverbanks, hike up to Grassington Moor for panoramic views, or explore the National Park Visitor Centre, which offers maps, guides, and ample parking just steps from the square. Seasonal highlights include festive markets in winter and wildflower-filled meadows in summer, making it a year-round destination.

Wharfedale villages

Beyond Grassington are the stunning villages of Kettlewell, Buckden and Kilnsey which lie further up the valley.  With local pubs and shops there is a Yorkshire welcome at every stop.

The nearby village of Hebden is incredibly popular with visitors, a bustling locally run café serves good Yorkshire food, and is popular for its walking routes which include abandoned industrial workings to the north, and the popular Hebden Suspension Bridge to the south.

Heading down the valley the popular beauty spots in the village of Burnsall, and Appletreewick nestle on a gentle section of the river Wharfe where riverside walks can be combined with delicious meals at one of the picturesque pubs and inns.
