About This Experience
The Walk
The Dales Way follows rivers almost all the way from Ilkley to the shores of Windermere. Over five to eight days it traces the River Wharfe deep into the Yorkshire Dales, crosses the Pennine watershed on an old Roman road, then drops through Dentdale and the Lune valley into the Lake District. With gentle gradients and only one real stretch of high ground, it is one of the best first long-distance walks in Britain.
Everything Arranged for You
We book your accommodation in comfortable local B&Bs and inns along the route, supporting the small businesses that make the Dales special. Your luggage is moved between each night's stop, breakfast is included at most places, and packed lunches can be arranged. We can also organise transfers to the start and from the finish.
Guided or Self-Guided
A Hike Yorkshire guide walks with you every day, handling the navigation and sharing the history, folklore and wildlife of the route. Our guides are experienced, and include former commandos and mountain leaders. If you would rather walk on your own, we can set you up self-guided, with our team meeting you at checkpoints to resupply.
Along the Way
Bolton Priory beside the Wharfe, the roaring Strid, Linton Falls and Grassington, the tiny church at Hubberholme, the Roman road across Cam Fell with views to Ribblehead, the cobbled streets of Dent, Sedbergh's bookshops, and finally Bowness-on-Windermere on the shores of England's largest natural lake.
Who It Suits
Regular walkers comfortable with several consecutive days of walking, with daily stages typically between 9 and 15 miles.
