Off-Grid Navigation Course

Switch Off and Find Your Way

Phones are excellent right up until the battery dies, the screen gets wet or the signal disappears, which across the Dales happens often. Our off-grid navigation courses teach you to find your way with nothing but a map and compass, and give you a day spent looking at the landscape rather than a screen.

Level 1: The Fundamentals

For complete beginners. Learn to read an Ordnance Survey map, use grid references, understand contours, take a bearing and follow a planned route confidently. The practical covers setting the map, following handrails, pacing and timing, and what to do if you are unsure where you are.

Level 2: Navigate Independently

For those with Level 1 or equivalent experience. Detailed contour reading, route cards and escape routes, aiming off and attack points, walking on a bearing in poor visibility, relocation techniques, emergency navigation using the stars, moon and prevailing wind.

How It Works

Each level is a six hour day in Grassington: two hours of classroom theory followed by a four hour practical on the hills above the village. Successful completion earns a Hike Yorkshire navigation certificate. Book both levels and save 25 percent.

Your Instructors

Our instructors served in the British Army and Royal Marines, where navigation is a core skill. They teach in small groups with low student to instructor ratios, so everyone gets proper attention.

Good to Know

Level 1 is from £65 and Level 2 from £85 per person. We provide the map, compass and course materials; bring warm waterproof clothing, comfortable footwear, food and water. Individuals and groups of any size are welcome. Minimum age 12, with under 16s accompanied by an adult.
