About Ripon Cathedral
Ripon Cathedral is a medieval marvel boasting a fascinating history all the way back to the 7th century. Serving the City of Ripon and the stunning county of North Yorkshire, worship is the heartbeat of Ripon Cathedral: with no fewer than three services each day including Choral Evensong (5.30pm/3.30pm Sunday) sung five times weekly by the nationally-acclaimed cathedral choir.
Open daily (8.30am-6pm Monday-Saturday and 12pm-5pm on Sunday) the cathedral offers visitors the chance to learn more about our fascinating history and admire the excellence of our stonework, woodwork and stained glass. Our team of experienced guides are experts in the extensive history of the cathedral, dating back over 1350 years. Bespoke 60-minute group tours are available by booking in advance. Alternatively, feel free to pick up one of our welcome postcards and explore at your own pace.
We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds and regularly hold free workshops throughout the school holidays where children can unleash their creativity and interact with their surroundings. Additionally, interactive trail sheets are available all year round to encourage children to explore both inside and outside of the cathedral.
For those who are musically inclined, there are weekly free concerts most Thursday lunchtimes during term time, held in the stunning setting of the quire. The concerts feature a range of musicians and performances across the year and provide the perfect opportunity to absorb the tranquil atmosphere and forget about the stresses of daily life. In June it’s our Summer Organ Festival with recitals from our cathedral organists. The cathedral also regularly hosts external concerts - whether it’s classical, choral or contemporary music, there is something for everyone! See the What’s On section of our website for ticket details.
With free entry you can explore this magnificent medieval cathedral including its Anglo-Saxon crypt, dating from 672AD it is the oldest intact structure of any English cathedral that is still in use today.
Boasting unusual treasures of art and design amongst which are carvings thought to have inspired Lewis Carroll’s ‘The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland’, Ripon Cathedral will not only take your breath away but take you on a journey of enlightenment & discovery. A warm welcome awaits.
