About Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Garden
Surrounded by beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, this World Heritage Site has a lot to offer for a thoroughly enjoyable day out.
The magnificent ruins of the once prosperous Fountains Abbey, the largest monastic ruins in the country, sit alongside a Georgian water garden that is sure to delight your senses. This breath-taking landscape is also home to a manor house known as Fountains Hall, Studley Royal medieval deer park, a beautiful Victorian church and Cistercian water-mill.
Fountains Abbey
Walk under the vaulted ceiling of the cellarium, through tall arches and marvel at the vast windows into the nave. Wonder at the way the monks tunneled the river and peer up the towering structure of Huby's Tower.
Guided tours are not able to run at the moment and Porter's Lodge is closed. If you'd like to learn more about the history of the site, there are guide books available to purchase in the shop.
Studley Royal water-garden
Wander along to the tranquil water gardens and admire the beautifully designed ponds, classical statues and visit the many follies dotted throughout the grounds. Don’t miss the High Ride path, with the stunning Surprise View looking out over the abbey and dare yourself to pass through the dark Serpentine Tunnel.
On your visit
Kids full of beans? Bring them along to let off steam in the children’s play area, which is full of fun things to climb on and over - including a miniature wooden abbey.
Find the perfect spot for a summer picnic on the abbey green, or indulge in some delicious home-made treats from the restaurant and Studley Royal tea-room looking out over the lake.
Don’t miss the shop either! It’s packed full of seasonal delights – from candles, fragrances and homewares, to books, cards and garden gear – you will find the ideal gift for your loved ones.
When can you visit?
Open daily throughout the year, each season brings something new to uncover whether it’s spring Snowdrops, summer views or autumnal colours.
From trails and wildlife walks to re-enactment weekends and outdoor theatre, you’ll find a wide range of events and activities to enjoy. Visit the website to see the full programme and seasonal highlights.
