It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and North Yorkshire is gearing up for a season packed with sparkle, yuletide entertainment, and Father Christmas sightings. Whether you’re planning a magical day out or a weekend escape with the kids, there’s no shortage of festive fun across the region. From twinkling trails to underground grottoes, here are some of the best Christmas experiences for families in 2026.
Where to see Father Christmas
Father Christmas has been spotted in North Yorkshire and there are lots of opportunities to meet him. Find him aboard a steam ride or in his underground grotto. Join in festive songs with his elves and post your letter at the North Pole Post Office.
Families can hop aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway's Santa Express from Pickering Station for a festive steam train ride through the moors packed with songs, laughter and Christmas cheer before meeting Father Christmas himself.
Step into the enchanted woodland of The Magical Christmas Experience at Mother Shipton's Cave for a day to remember as you explore festive displays, meet cheerful elves and visit Father Christmas in his cosy grotto – don't forget to post your letter at the Snowy Owl Sorting Office! (pictured).
Families can venture underground at Ingleborough Cave for a festive grotto experience like no other. Guided by jolly elves, explore illuminated passages that lead to an exciting meeting with Father Christmas before selecting a gift with a wide selection of gifts for all ages. Set within the stunning Yorkshire Dales, this magical adventure is one not to be missed.
This November, greet Father Christmas at Stockeld Park as he arrives for the season and parades through the park. Step inside the Grotto Dome for an enchanting visit with Father Christmas and his elves.
Harewood House welcomes Father Christmas to their Elf Village where children can help prepare for the big day with interactive activities, festive music and twinkly lights in this immersive experience guaranteed to create magical memories for the whole family.
Festive experiences full of magic
Stockeld Park's Christmas Adventure offers a full programme of festive activities for families. Highlights include the Winter Illuminations trail, a covered ice rink, and a live Christmas Theatre Show, alongside the amazing indoor playground for fun no matter the weather.
Harrogate Theatre is the place to be this season for festive family fun as Sleeping Beauty promises a panto experience filled with laughs, songs, and memorable characters.
Sparkling light displays
The gardens at RHS Garden Harlow Carr are filled with twinkling light displays and installations as Glow returns for its tenth year. Follow the illuminated trails as each part of the garden creates another magical festive moment (pictured).
If you fancy getting into the Christmas spirit early, Luminescence – A Winter Light Trail returns to Swinton Park this October with magical light installations around every corner as you explore the woodland around Coffin Lake. Stop along the way for a hot chocolate to add to the cosy feels.
Take to the ice on the new outdoor rink in Harrogate’s Valley Gardens before heading to the town centre where you can try curling, take a snow globe selfie or follow the ice sculpture trail (12 December).
