- Ten Ways To Get An Authentic North Yorkshire Experience
Ten ways to discover what Yorkshire is all about
Visit an Agricultural Show – As well as the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate, which is the largest annual show in the country, towns and villages across North Yorkshire come together annually through out the year to celebrate their countryside and communities, and how they make this county great.
Enjoy a pint in Masham – Masham is a town that lives and breathes its great Yorkshire ale, with two family breweries and several welcoming pubs. Enjoy a tour of the Black Sheep Brewery and discover the story of great Yorkshire beer.
Enjoy Fish and Chips on the beach, watch the tide come in and enjoy this classic coastal dish from one of our great fish and chips shops, such as Fish Box – a family run ‘chippy’ that has been serving the nation’s favourite dish for nearly 60 years.
Go for a Spa in Harrogate, Yorkshire’s original spa town – As well as the famous Turkish Baths Harrogate, there are several excellent spas across the town offering a range of experiences such as traditional steam rooms and plunge pools, to the modern and contemporary treatments and methods.
Scale a mighty peak – There’s a special feeling when you stand on the summit of any hill you have just climbed and look back to absorb the view. North Yorkshire is a walking and cycling haven with the right hill for everyone to feel a bit of burn in the legs.
Catch a steam train to Whitby – having appeared on both the small and large screen, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the most scenic heritage lines in the county with several classic locomotives in preservation. For an extra treat enjoy a meal on the Pullman Dining Train and enjoy a delicious meal and you gently travel all the way to the coast from Pickering, in the heart of the Moors.
Picnic at an abbey – The history of our landscape is closely tied to the abbeys and monasteries that once managed and owned much of it. These incredible buildings survive as magnificent monuments to medieval engineering, and their grounds have become popular picnic spots due to their idyllic settings and surroundings.
Visit the highest pub in England – Tan Hill Inn sits above the northernmost valleys of the Yorkshire Dales and has incredible views thanks to its unequalled altitude; come summer or winter it’s a must visit location.
Set the Watch in Ripon – witness the 1000 year old tradition where every night one of the four Ripon Hornblowers processes to the four corners of the obelisk in the marketplace and sounds the ceremonial horn to mark the setting off the watch, notifying the residents of Ripon that the night's watchman is in post.
Admire the finest view in England – The clifftop viewing point at Sutton Bank provides one of the most remarkable views in the country, giving an astonishing panorama over the Vale of York to the south, and Vale of Mowbray to the north.
