- The Ghost Of Harrogate Theatre The Story Of Alice
Theatres are famous for their history and glamour, but they also carry a reputation for something far spookier. When the lights drop and the curtains draw, these incredible buildings come alive with performance, but after the final applause fades, they often have a very different kind of presence.
To embrace the spooky season, we’re shining a spotlight on one of North Yorkshire’s more elusive characters; we asked a member of Harrogate Theatre team to uncover the stories surrounding their resident ghost, Alice.
The story of Alice
The stage has always been a place where stories come to life but at Harrogate Theatre, some say one story never quite ended.
According to local ghostly folklore, the theatre is home to the ghost of a woman named Alice, believed to have been an actress whose tragic love story ended within the walls of the theatre.
There are several versions of Alice's story. One legend claims that she fell deeply in love with a theatre director, only to discover that her feelings would never be returned in the way she had hoped.
Another, more tragic version says that Alice became involved in a drunken argument with the director after he refused to leave his wife. In the midst of the confrontation, Alice climbed to the theatre's top balcony and leapt to her death.
There is no way to establish whether this tragic story actually happened, and the details vary between accounts. Nevertheless, it has become part of the folklore surrounding Harrogate Theatre and, according to legend, Alice never truly left.
Those who believe they have encountered Alice describe some particularly eerie experiences. Some have reported seeing a ghostly white figure within the auditorium, while others claim to have witnessed mysterious orbs of hovering light. Some visitors have allegedly experienced sudden, unexplained chills, as though an unexpected coldness has passed through the theatre. Perhaps the most distinctive detail associated with Alice, however, is the reported scent of peppermint.
So, when visiting the theatre, if a sudden chill passes over you or you catch the faint, unmistakable scent of peppermint you may find yourself wondering whether Alice has returned to the theatre once again.
The history
Harrogate Theatre first opened its doors on 13 January 1900 and has seen many notable figures cross it's doors, including screen legends like Charlie Chaplin. Originally named The Grand Opera House, the venue was designed by renowned architect Frank Tugwell, who was also the inspiration behind Scarborough’s Futurist Theatre and London’s Savoy Theatre.
