A Wizard's Guide to North Yorkshire

Experience the Magic: Harry Potter's North Yorkshire Connections

In 2026, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone celebrates its 25th anniversary, marking the start of one of the world's most beloved film franchises. While much of the magic was created at Hogwarts, some of the series' most memorable moments were filmed right here in North Yorkshire. Discover the real-life locations that brought the wizarding world to life, from Harry's first day at Hogwarts to the hunt for Horcruxes.

Where was Harry Potter filmed?

Goathland Station also known as Hogsmeade Station

Goathland Station is arguably one of the most iconic filming locations in North Yorkshire. This charming heritage stop featured as Hogsmeade Station in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone where Harry first arrived on his journey to Hogwarts.

You can visit this beautifully preserved North Yorkshire Moors Railway platform and take a ride on a heritage steam train.

Surrounded by sweeping moorland, there's a magical atmosphere that feels straight from the wizarding world. It's easy to see why filmmakers chose this picturesque location. Whether you're a witch, wizard or muggle, Goathland is a truly magical place to visit.

Malham Cove - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Our next stop may look very familiar, whether you're a devoted Harry Potter fan or simply love spectacular landscapes.

Malham Cove, the 70 metre (230ft) high, gently curving cliff of white limestone made an appearance in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, serving as the dramatic campsite where Harry and Hermione took refuge during their mission to destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes.

Today, visitors can climb to the top of this popular cove and take in breath-taking views across the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

We recommend coming in spring or autumn when the walk is often quieter. The route includes steep steps and may not be suitable for all abilities. Always check the weather before setting off and please follow the Countryside Code.

Park considerately, stick to marked paths, take litter home, respect local communities and keep dogs on a lead.

Skipton - The New Home of Hogwarts Magic

Skipton is set to play a role in the franchise's next chapter, HBO's Harry Potter television series, which will premiere on Christmas Day 2026.

Several streets were temporarily transformed as production crews recreated the wizarding world.

The sight of filming taking place in the heart of Skipton has already generated excitement among fans. Will you be watching the magic come to life on screen?

From Voldemort to Viral apocalypse

North Yorkshire has been the setting for many blockbuster productions, including 28 Years Later, starring Ralph Fiennes, famously known to Harry Potter fans as Lord Voldemort.

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden provides a dramatic backdrop with spectacular ancient ruins, making a standout filming location.

While you won't find any Horcruxes hidden among this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can still experience some movie magic.
