Tour North Yorkshire's Great Road Cycling Routes

Road racing routes and cycle friendly places to stay

As North Yorkshire prepares to host Stage 4 of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men, cycling fans have the perfect excuse to get out and explore the county on two wheels. Taking place on Saturday 5 September 2026, the race's famous "Queen Stage" will shine a spotlight on North Yorkshire's challenging climbs and breathtaking scenery.

Stage 4 is designed to test riders to their limits - linking two of North Yorkshire's most famous landscapes: the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales (known for their undulating terrain!), and passes through two of our National Landscapes on the way - the Howardian Hills and Nidderdale.

The stage covers 103 miles (166 km) through dramatic countryside with just under 2,700 metres of climbing. Starting in Helmsley, the route winds its way through the heart of North Yorkshire, before a dramatic finish in the market town of Leyburn.

Inspired by the race, we've highlighted some of the fantastic cycling routes and facilities across the county so you can discover the ride for yourself. Read on for cycle-friendly places to stay, pubs and cafés for that necessary pit stop, as well as some of best cycling and scenery the area has to offer.

Route inspiration

Here we are showcasing some of the road classics, they can be taken on as long-distance day rides or multi-day trips, depending on your legs!

Feeling brave? Cycle in the bike tracks of the pros as you take on the Tour de France in the Dales route - a 125km circular. Ride towards Wharfedale from Grassington passing Kilnsey Crag to Kidstones Pass to cycle the first climb. If you still have the stamina, carry on to complete the second and third climbs on the route which takes you over Buttertubs Pass and Grinton Moor.

The Rosedale Chimney cycle route is a challenging climb located in the North York Moors. You can attempt the climb as part of ‘The Classic Rosedale & Blakey Ridge Loop’ – an 18.5 mile challenge up Chimney Bank and over moorland roads and past historic iron kilns. Be warned, it’s considered one of the hardest climbs in the UK with very steep gradients!

Way of the Roses is a 170-mile coast-to-coast route from Morecambe to Bridlington, passing through Settle, Pateley Bridge, Ripon, and York. As is tradition, dip your back wheel in the Irish Sea at Morecombe and finish by dipping your front wheel in the North Sea at Bridlington.

The Yorkshire Dales Cycleway is a challenging but rewarding 130-mile circular route. Designed to start and finish in Skipton, it winds its way through classic Dales towns and villages like Malham, Hawes, and Reeth.

Cycle-friendly places to stay

When planning a cycling trip finding accommodation where you can comfortably store your gear and recharge after a day on the bike is essential. The Dales Bike Centre in Fremington, near Reeth, is popular with cyclists for bike hire, accommodation and food and drink. It is located directly on the Stage 4 route in the heart of Swaledale, and also plays host to the famous Ard Rock – the UK’s biggest mountain biking festival.

King William the Fourth Guest House, Settle, is run by keen cyclists who understand the needs of riders. It offers locked cellar bike storage with charging points for e-bikes, cooked-to-order breakfasts, and easy access to classic routes like the Way of the Roses and the Settle Loop.
