Where was All Creatures Great and Small filmed?
Newby Hall and Gardens
Newby Hall and Gardens stars in All Creatures Great and Small as Orley Castle, the impressive estate introduced as the home of Tristan’s new love interest, Charlotte Beauvoir, in series six. Set in 40 acres near Ripon, this elegant 17th‑century Wren‑designed house provides a perfect stately backdrop for the series. Admire the herbaceous borders and expansive gardens, enjoy a riverside walk, let loose on the adventure playground and tour the richly decorated state rooms.
Ripon Racecourse
Known as “Yorkshire's Garden Racecourse”, Ripon Racecourse featured in All Creatures Great and Small when Siegfried Farnon treats an injured racehorse. Set on the edge of the historic city of Ripon, it's a great place to experience Yorkshire's long-standing connection with horses and rural life.
Surrender Bridge
One of the most recognisable locations from the original All Creatures Great and Small, Surrender Bridge appears in the opening credits as James Herriot crosses the historic stone bridge over Old Gang Beck. More recently, the area was also featured in the 2026 film adaptation of "Wuthering Heights". Follow the walking route to nearby Old Gang Smelt Mill to discover dramatic views and the fascinating remains of the Dales' lead mining past against big sky views.
Kettlewell
The picturesque village of Kettlewell has appeared throughout All Creatures Great and Small, providing additional exterior scenes of Darrowby and classic Yorkshire Dales views. Fans may recognise Top Mere Road, where James Herriot is seen running along the steep track in series one. Today, the village is a popular base for exploring Wharfedale's walking trails, traditional pubs and stunning Dales scenery.
Ripley
The picturesque village of Ripley, near Harrogate, stepped back in time for All Creatures Great and Small, with vintage vehicles, period shopfronts and actors in 1940s costume transforming its historic streets in the upcoming series seven. In series two, James and Helen enjoy their first elegant meal together at Ripley Castle, which was reimagined on screen as Renniston Hotel. This impressive Grade I listed country house has been home to the Ingilby family for more than 700 years and can be explored on tours on selected dates.
Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal
Studley Royal Cricket Club served as the exterior filming location in series two for Mrs Pumphrey’s annual cricket match at the small cricket ground tucked away within Fountains Abbey Deer Park, with additional exterior and interior marquee scenes also filmed within the Deer Park.
Take time to explore the breathtaking Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of North Yorkshire's most spectacular historic landscapes.
The Herriot Way
The Herriot Way is a 52‑mile circular walking trail through the Yorkshire Dales, inspired by a walking holiday James Herriot once shared with his son. The route winds through Wensleydale and Swaledale, taking in highlights such as Aysgarth Falls, Hawes and Keld, and is typically completed over four relaxed days. It’s a perfect way to experience the landscapes, villages and gentle charm that inspired Herriot’s much‑loved stories.
