Harrogate is one of North Yorkshire’s most magical places to visit during the festive season, and whilst the Harrogate Christmas Fayre isn't part of the festive calendar for this year, there is still plenty to enjoy.
With twinkling lights, seasonal events, and plenty of opportunities to shop, eat and relax, Harrogate is the perfect destination for a Christmas day out or winter getaway.
From charming markets and events to family-friendly activities, here’s how to enjoy a wonderfully festive Harrogate this Christmas.
Soak up the festive atmosphere in Valley Gardens
Valley Gardens will once again be at the heart of Harrogate’s Christmas celebrations with a host of festive attractions and family-friendly experiences throughout the Christmas season. Visitors can look forward to Harrogate Ice Pavilion a covered ice rink (which is open to the public from Thursday 17 December through to Sunday 3 January, excluding Christmas Day), adding a magical winter feel to this already beautiful green space.
The popular Little Bird Made Christmas Market also returns for the first weekend of December (5-6) bringing together a carefully curated selection of independent makers, artists and food producers, offering a unique shopping experience full of handcrafted gifts and local treats.
Discover festive fun across the town
Harrogate’s Christmas spirit extends well beyond Valley Gardens, with seasonal activities taking place throughout the town centre. Harrogate BID will be helping to spread festive cheer with a programme of seasonal activities for visitors of all ages.
Families can step into Santa's Grotto on selected days during December, while visitors looking for a little friendly competition can try their hand at the interactive curling lanes. A giant snow globe will provide the perfect festive photo opportunity, and an Ice Trail (12 December) will encourage visitors to explore the town centre as they discover a series of ice sculptures along the way.
Enjoy seasonal shows and sparkling winter experiences
Harrogate’s much-loved attractions add even more magic to the festive season. At RHS Garden Harlow Carr, the spectacular GLOW illumination trail transforms the gardens into a dazzling winter wonderland, perfect for an evening stroll surrounded by twinkling lights. In the heart of the town, Harrogate Theatre brings festive cheer with its popular pantomime - Sleeping Beauty, offering fun, laughter and a touch of tradition for all ages.
Send a letter from the North Pole
A visit to Harrogate wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the magical North Pole Post Office, brought to town by Harrogate International Festivals.
Perfect for little ones (and the young at heart), this enchanting experience gives children the chance to post their letters directly to Father Christmas. It’s a lovely festive tradition and a memorable highlight for families visiting over the Christmas period.
Shop for the perfect Christmas gifts
Harrogate is a fantastic place to tick off your Christmas shopping, with a great mix of well-known brands and independent businesses lining the town centre.
