Day 1: book into your accommodation

Ashes Farm

Book into your bed & breakfast accommodation at Ashes Farm near the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct where you will experience a quiet, relaxing break. The surrounding countryside offers beautiful views during the day and stargazing at night and it’s the perfect place to ‘get away from it all’. This is a great base to enjoy walking, scenery and nature, and after a hearty Yorkshire breakfast you are ready to start exploring.

Day 2: morning: first stop

Settle Tourist Information Centre

Spend a day in the lovely dales market town of Settle. Your first stop is the Tourist Information Centre where you can pick up free leaflets and maps to make the most of your stay and ensure you don’t miss anything. The friendly, knowledgeable team can guide you to the best places and hidden gems with their insider knowledge. You can buy maps of the area here, as well as souvenirs.

Day 2: morning: next stop

Settle

Spend time looking around the many independent shops in the town where you can pick up gifts for friends or a treat for yourself. Visiting on a Tuesday gives you the opportunity to shop at the weekly outdoor market as you browse the stalls around the Market Place. Visit Settle Victoria Hall where you can see the current exhibitions, enjoy refreshments in their outside café and browse the emporium shop. Enjoy a tasty pub lunch or pick up some sweet treats for an afternoon walk.

Day 2: afternoon

Stainforth Force

This pretty cascade waterfall is three miles from Settle, and you can follow a lovely eight-mile circular walk starting and finishing in the town. The route follows the line of the River Ribble to the falls where you can see the spectacular sight of leaping salmon in autumn.  Find a nearby picnic spot where you can sit and enjoy your refreshments.  As the route turns back towards Settle, take in the views of Pen-y-ghent and the dramatic limestone outcrops before descending back to Settle.

Day 3: morning

Ribblehead Viaduct

The famous Ribblehead Viaduct in the shadow of Whernside is located just one mile from your accommodation. It is the route of the Settle-Carlisle Railway as it travels through the Yorkshire Dales on its way into Cumbria. Walk up to the imposing twenty-four stone and brick arches and wonder at the Victorian engineering that built such a structure. There is a pretty four-mile circular walk starting at Ribblehead station which offer views of the nearby peaks.

Day 3: afternoon

The Settle-Carlisle Railway

Board the Settle-Carlisle train at Ribblehead station for a journey across the viaduct and through dramatic countryside or travel south through the pretty villages of Horton-in-Ribblesdale and Gargrave to Skipton where you can spend a few hours exploring this charming market town with its imposing castle and picturesque canal.

Day 4: daytime

Ingleborough Cave

Head south to the village of Clapham and park for the day in the pay-and-display car park. At the top of the village is the Ingleborough Nature Trail which takes you through picturesque woodland. Look out for the peak of Ingleborough in the distance as the trail takes you to the entrance of Ingleborough Cave. Head five hundred metres underground and explore the magical cave system. Walk back along the nature trail and enjoy lunch at the Sawmill Café.

Day 4: evening

The Station Inn at Ribblehead

After a day of exploring, retreat to the welcoming atmosphere of The Station Inn at Ribblehead. On a sunny evening sit out in the beer garden and relax as you are treated to stunning views of the viaduct and sweeping remote moorland. On colder days, the cosy pub interior is a welcome retreat from the wild dales weather. Enjoy classic homemade pub grub, a choice of excellent beers and good Yorkshire company.

Just one day more....

Explore Wensleydale

Book an extra two nights at The Hut in the Wood in Askrigg and extend your stay in the area. This cosy shepherd’s hut has a log burner, king size bed and kitchen area and is situated in an acre of garden woodland. Keep warm on an evening by the firepit and toast marshmallows.

Hawes is a market town full of character, and you can spend a day here exploring its cobbled streets. Visit the Dales Countryside Museum and the Wensleydale Creamery and enjoy lunch at one of the historic pubs in the town or the nearby Green Dragon at Hardraw.  The nearby three-tiered Aysgarth Falls are also a sight not to be missed!
