About Ribblehead Viaduct
The twenty four arch Grade II* listed Ribblehead Viaduct was constructed between 1869 and 1874 and opened to passenger trains on 1 May 1876. Northern services between Settle and Carlisle run on the line and passengers can enjoy stunning views across the moorland of this part of the Yorkshire Dales and nearby Whernside, one of the Three Peaks.
Steam Excursions operate across the Ribblehead Viaduct in the summer months.
The land surrounding the viaduct has been recognised as a scheduled monument covering the villages that were built and lived in by the railway 'navvies' and their families during the construction of the viaduct. There is also a memorial to the lives lost during this time.
