About The Settle–Carlisle Railway

Step aboard one of Britain’s most iconic railway routes and experience North Yorkshire at its most dramatic. The Settle–Carlisle Railway is more than a train ride—it’s a journey through history and breathtaking landscapes, celebrated worldwide as one of Europe’s greatest scenic lines.

A Journey Through the Yorkshire Dales

Starting in the market town of Settle, the line climbs steadily into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. As the train winds between the famous Three Peaks—Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough, and Whernside—you’ll see rolling green valleys give way to rugged moorland. The highlight for many is crossing the Ribblehead Viaduct, a Victorian engineering marvel with 24 soaring arches set against the wild beauty of Batty Moss.

Beyond Ribblehead, the route passes through remote stations like Dent—the highest mainline station in England—before skirting Dentdale and reaching the summit at Ais Gill, 1,169 feet above sea level. From here, the line descends into the lush Eden Valley, dotted with market towns such as Kirkby Stephen and Appleby, before continuing to Carlisle.
