About Aysgarth Falls
Discover the breathtaking beauty of Aysgarth Falls, a series of three spectacular stepped waterfalls on the River Ure that have captivated visitors for over two centuries. The Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls each offer their own character - from thundering cascades to gentler tiers framed by woodland. Together they create one of Yorkshire’s most stunning attractions, immortalised by William Wordsworth who honeymooned here, and J.M.W. Turner in his Aysgarth Force painting. It’s also a popular filming location thanks to its dramatic scenery, providing a backdrop for scenes in Wuthering Heights, the fight scene featuring Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as well as zombie flick 28 Years Later.
The surrounding Freeholders’ Wood Local Nature Reserve provides a network of easy, accessible paths. In spring, carpets of wood anemones and primroses brighten the trails, while roe deer may be glimpsed darting through the trees. More recently, dormice have been reintroduced and are thriving, adding to the woodland’s rich biodiversity.
Visitors will find a National Park Centre with café and car park at the site, making it easy to explore.
Top tip: the waterfalls are at their most dramatic after heavy rain, offering unforgettable views and photo opportunities.
Please follow the safety instructions and do not enter the water. Rocks can be slippery underfoot so please take care and monitor children at all times. Dogs are welcome.
