The dawning of spring in North Yorkshire

Discover the best places in North Yorkshire to see nature unfold this season

North Yorkshire is a year-round destination, but spring is one of the best times to explore if you enjoy seeing nature at its finest.

The county is home to a range of protected landscapes, including the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks, as well as Nidderdale National Landscape and 18 designated Local Nature Reserves - all offering unique landscapes to explore this season.

From the limestone valleys and the rolling hills in the west to the fresh sea air of the east coast, the seasons can emerge at different times across the county. This means that as you travel around North Yorkshire, you might see bluebells emerging in one location, while they may be in full bloom in another. Week by week, month by month you can see these little changes gradually taking place and enjoy the season for even longer!

Here, we've selected some of the best places in North Yorkshire to experience nature at this time of year.

Yorkshire Dales: the call of the curlew

Woodlands come alive in the Dales, brimming with wildflowers: snowdrops, lesser celandine, primroses and bluebells. Oxenber and Wharfe Woods, near Austwick, a Site Of Special Scientific Interest, presents a wonderful display of bluebells and other woodland flowers.

Visit Grass Wood near Grassington where there are fine displays of lily-of-the-valley, or Freeholders’ Wood next to the three-tier waterfall at Aysgarth Falls where you can find drifts of wood anemones. And after all this rain, it’s the perfect time of year to watch the spectacular falls in full flow.

Listen out for the defining sounds of the curlew – a sure sign that spring is here. Woodlands are also the best place to hear the dawn chorus. International Dawn Chorus Day is a global celebration of birdsong, traditionally held on the first Sunday in May - so mark your calendars and set your alarm for one of the most joyful and recognisable markers of spring.

Towns in bloom: Harrogate and Helmsley

Harrogate is one of the best towns to see spring transform through the season. Crocuses pop up on the verges, followed by daffodils and the iconic display of blossom on the Stray, making the parkland a beautiful spot for a picnic!

Helmsley, on the edge of the North York Moors, is awash with blossom as it emerges on the trees around the village. There is access to lovely woodland and valley walks from the town centre, or for beautiful planting schemes and displays, visit the Helmsley Walled Garden.

Moors in motion: wildflowers and waterfalls

The moors is one of the best places in the county to enjoy the spring scene. Moorland remains expansive and open, while valleys and woodlands start to build their green canopy – fantastic places for spotting signs of spring.

If nature is what you're craving, the daffodils in Farndale are a sight not to be missed; or the ancient woodlands of Ashberry Nature Reserve flanked by flower-rich limestone grassland and marshes in spring. Another top pick is the secluded valley of Little Beck Wood Nature Reserve, situated next to the Falling Foss waterfall.

These clearer spring skies also make it a great time to take a dark sky retreat for some stargazing!

The coast: seabird spectacles and coastal wildlife

There’s nothing like a stroll along the coast. Think harbour views at Staithes, dramatic cliff-top walks around Runswick Bay, and quiet beaches - a great time of year for exploring coastal villages before the busier Summer season.

One of the most significant wildlife spectacles occurs during April and May, when seabird colonies are building and migration begins to take place - you are guaranteed to see some incredible wildlife sightings. A seasonal window you don’t want to miss!
