What is Boroughbridge known for?
A busy high street packed with great local shops run by passionate enthusiasts, a history of hospitality that dates back to when horse drawn coaches were the main way of travelling as the town lies at the half way point of the Great North Road (now the A1) between London and Edinburgh. There is also a mix of history going all the way back to the neolithic era, all accompanied by a relaxed and gentle pace of life.
What are the main historical sites in Boroughbridge?
There is a little bit of everything in the Historical sites around town, the Devil’s Arrows are three standing stones, wrapped in myth and dating back to the Bronze age.
Nearby Aldborough is the site of a fascinating Roman site, once the capital of one of the largest Romanised tribes in Britain, the Brigantes.
More recent historical splendour can be enjoyed at the Christopher Wren designed Newby Hall, with extensive gardens and parkland.
Is Boroughbridge dog friendly?
This is an extremely dog friendly town, with dogs welcome in many of the shops and places to eat, and you may even find a four-legged shop assistant to say hello to as you make your purchase. As you peruse the shops you will find many will also keep water bowls topped up outside their door for passing dogs to drink from.
Is Boroughbridge good for Sunday lunch?
Oh yes and there is plenty of choice, from light and refined bits all the way through to the heartiest of gravy laden roasts in one of the town’s many pubs.
Boroughbridge rose to prominence as a coaching town due it being exactly halfway between London and Edinburgh, and that history of hospitality lives on today.
