Why Visit.... Whitby

What can I do when visiting Whitby? Whether it’s enjoying fish and chips or immersing yourself in the rich maritime history and heritage the town has to offer there is plenty to do. If you’re looking for some family fun, head on one of the many boat trips in Whitby Harbour or ride the historic steam train from Whitby into the moors.

If you’d like to learn more about the history of the town, visit one of the museums which are home to many local artefacts and information on the maritime past, famous residents of Whitby and fossil find from along the coast.

Take on the 199 steps where you can enjoy views from the cliff from the incredible gothic ruins. Alternatively, wander along the beaches and breath in the fresh sea air or enjoy the beautiful Pannett Park.

There are many events and festivals scheduled throughout the year from the Goth Festival, Krampus Run, Folk Festival and Whitby Regatta. You will also find a programme of fabulous shows at the Whitby Pavilion. 

Can I walk around Whitby? Whitby is a very compact seaside town with many attractions accessible on foot. It is worth noting that Whitby Abbey is commonly accessed via the famous 199 steps and visiting West Cliff is via a steep incline. 

What big events are there in Whitby? Whitby hosts many events all year-round including festivals celebrating local seafood, the town’s maritime history and gothic connections. Key highlights include Fish & Ships Festival, Whitby Regatta, Goth Festival, Whitby Lit Fest, The Krampus Run and Whitby Folk Week. 

What are the best walks to do from Whitby? With Whitby’s excellent location there are many walks including the Cleveland Way along the coastal path. You can walk in both directions along the route and visit nearby coastal villages. The Cinder Track Walk takes you all the way to Scarborough and is on a track surface making it ideal for cyclists too.

Other local walks include a track along the River Esk towards Ruswarp, routes to nearby places such as Sandsend, Robin Hood’s Bay or inland towards Grosmont where lots of walking routes around the North York Moors can be explored.

Are dogs allowed on the beach in Whitby? Dogs are allowed on Tate Hill Sands all year round with seasonal restrictions between May and October on West Cliff Beach and nearby Sandsend Beach. 

Is Whitby worth visiting? As a popular seaside destination, Whitby is well worth visiting all year round. Offering something for every visitor whether that is delving into the rich maritime history, following in the steps of Dracula or enjoying delicious food along the harbour.
