North Yorkshire is a great place to head out on a run

The varied terrain gives you a choice of routes based on the type of running you are looking to do, whether you are a serious athlete looking to get some training in or a fun runner looking to build the miles up in your legs.

Enjoy fell running in the Yorkshire Dales, jog around some of the reservoirs in the county, run along the beach or hit one of the cycle paths along disused railways.

Fell running in the Yorkshire Dales

The hilly terrain of the Yorkshire Dales National Park makes it the perfect place for fell running.  You can enter one of the many events that take place each year or make your own way across the countryside.

One of the biggest events in the calendar is the Three Peaks Race held every April taking in Ingleborough, Pen-y-Ghent and Whernside. This is the perfect way to challenge yourself while lifting your mood at the same time, so grab your running shoes and head out.

Run by the water’s edge

The reservoirs of North Yorkshire offer some great options for running routes.  Follow the edge of the water around Swinsty and Fewston Reservoirs on easy-going paths or choose the more challenging terrain of Scar House, Grimwith and Thruscross reservoirs. Enjoy the peace of these nature havens whilst tapping out the miles.

Head to the coast and enjoy a run on one of our beautiful beaches or stretch your legs along the Cleveland Way through Staithes, Sandsend, Runswick Bay, Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Scarborough, and Cayton Bay to the finishing point at Filey.

From steam power to leg power

There are several cycle paths in North Yorkshire that follow the routes of old railway lines and provide easy-going level ground for those runners who are looking for some gentle exercise. The Cinder Path runs between Scarborough and Whitby, and The Nidderdale Greenway from Harrogate to Ripley which links to the Beryl Burton Cycleway into Knaresborough.

There are numerous waymarked running trails at Sutton Bank in the North York Moors National Park, bridleways across open moorland and across fields and various Park Runs for visitors to participate in.

Or be really ‘out there’ and take part in the Marathon du Malton in September each year and combine a 10km run with food and drink stops along the way!
