All about Whitby

What is Whitby famous/known for? Whitby is known for many things besides being a popular seaside destination on the Yorkshire Coast. Here are some of the things:

  • Award winning seafood including a variety of Fish and Chip establishments serving the famous Whitby Scampi and traditional Fish & Chips.
  • Whitby is known for being Bram Stoker’s inspiration for Dracula. Bram Stoker stayed in the area in 1890 and the dramatic gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey inspired the novel
  • Captain James Cook is another well known figure famous for connections with the town of Whitby. The explorer lived in Whitby as a young man. 

What can I do when visiting Whitby? Whether it’s enjoying fish and chips or immersing yourself in the rich maritime history and heritage the town has to offer there is plenty to do. If you’re looking for some family fun, head on one of the many boat trips in Whitby Harbour or ride the historic steam train from Whitby into the moors.

If you’d like to learn more about the history of the town, visit one of the museums which are home to many local artefacts and information on the maritime past, famous residents of Whitby and fossil find from along the coast.

Take on the 199 steps where you can enjoy views from the cliff from the incredible gothic ruins. Alternatively, wander along the beaches and breath in the fresh sea air or enjoy the beautiful Pannett Park.

There are many events and festivals scheduled throughout the year from the Goth Festival, Krampus Run, Folk Festival and Whitby Regatta. You will also find a programme of fabulous shows at the Whitby Pavilion. 

Is Whitby a dog friendly place? Whitby is a very dog friendly place with many pubs, restaurants and attractions such as Whitby Abbey allowing well behaved dogs. Tate Hill Sands also offers unrestricted access to dogs all year round with seasonal restrictions between 1 May – 30 September at West Cliff Beach. 

Does Whitby have an old town? The older part of Whitby is the east side where you will find Whitby Abbey, the 199 steps and the older cobbled streets. 

Did Captain James Cook live in Whitby? Captain James Cook lived in Whitby as a young man where he became an apprentice seaman. You can visit the house which he resided in on Grape Lane which is now the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. 

Did Dracula live in Whitby? Dracula is a fictional character created by Bram Stoker. The Author is said to have taken inspiration from Whitby and its dramatic landscapes for the novel. Bram Stoker stayed on the West Cliff when he visited Whitby in 1890. 

What food is Whitby known for? Whitby is known for award winning seafood with a multitude of places to try out the famous Whitby Scampi, smoked kippers or traditional Fish & Chips. If you are looking for something a little unique, you will find a Fish & Chips Afternoon Tea. What a delight! Whitby is also home to  many other restaurants, traditional tea rooms offering a selection of cuisines for visitors.
