Located in the north of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the scenery of Upper Wensleydale is marked by its hilly terrain and patchwork of dry-stone walls. Small villages are dotted across the landscape, and dramatic waterfalls make this a beautiful area to visit.
The River Ure winds its way through the valley and is home to a variety of plant and animal life along its banks including wildflowers in the summer months, otters and brown trout. Day tickets can be purchased for some excellent fly fishing on the River Ure from the local inn in Bainbridge. Bainbridge is also home to the Yorkshire Dales National Park Headquarters.
Upper Wensleydale is known for its dramatic waterfalls including the three drop Aysgarth Falls near the village of Aysgarth. Hidden in pretty woodland, these spectacular falls are particularly stunning after heavy rain. The staff at the National Park Visitor Centre at the falls will help you make the most of your visit.
Hardraw Force nestled behind the local pub in Hardraw, near Hawes, is the highest single drop waterfall in England. The surrounding rocks have created a natural amphitheatre and film fans will recognise it from the film Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves starring Kevin Costner.
Cotter Force between Hawes and Sedbergh is a waterfall on a short accessible walk from the main A684 road.

Wensleydale is home to some spectacular scenic roads and perhaps one of the most scenic is the Buttertubs Pass going from Upper Wensleydale into Swaledale. This road offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, and once at the top of the pass you can pull in and visit the limestone potholes. Cycling fans will know this section of road as part of the route of the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart and cyclists continue to test their climbing skills here.
Castle Bolton with its village green is overlooked by a majestic castle where Mary Queen of Scots was held for six months. Nearby Redmire village was used as a filming location for the original All Creatures Great and Small TV series.
