Celebrating World Theatre Day
In honour of World Theatre Day we thought it only right to shine a spotlight on the amazing theatres we have here in North Yorkshire. Without being ‘dramatic’, we think that we have some of the best theatres around, so let’s raise the curtain and see what North Yorkshire has to offer…
Stephen Joseph Theatre
Originally an Odeon cinema, this beautifully restored 1930s Art Deco building is now home to the world-famous theatre-in-the-round, the first of its kind in the world.
Indulge in a diverse array of theatrical performances and cinema screenings throughout the year. The theatre's illustrious history is further enriched by its long-standing connection to the renowned playwright, Sir Alan Ayckbourn, who has served as the artistic director for an impressive 37 years. Ayckbourn has written and produced 89 full-length plays in both Scarborough and London, solidifying his status as an industry icon.
Whether you're a theatre aficionado or simply looking for that perfect Instagram shot, the Stephen Joseph Theatre is a must-see destination. Don't forget to visit Eat Me Café & Social on the first floor, where you can enjoy delicious food and drinks.

Whitby Pavilion
Situated on the West Cliff of Whitby you’ll find the iconic Whitby Pavilion Theatre. Built in 1878, this Victorian marvel offers incredible views overlooking the North Sea. The theatre is home to a mix of entertainment including plays, traditional drama, pantomimes, musicals and comedy, so audiences of all ages will find something to enjoy.
Fancy something to eat? Not a problem, the pavilion café within the glass atrium is a great place for a bite to eat with stunning panoramic sea views from Sandsend Nab to Whitby’s east and west piers.

Harrogate Theatre
Dating back to 1900, the Harrogate Theatre boasts a full season of co-productions, touring companies and one night only events. With theatrical productions taking place all year round and throughout the District, there is always something new to discover. The theatre is also home to the annual Harrogate Comedy Festival bringing today’s comedy stars and those of the future to the Harrogate District every October.

Selby Town Hall

Renowned for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, the venue offers a diverse range of performances, from bluegrass and stand-up comedy, to contemporary dance and world music. It's played host to headline acts such as Alan Carr, Midge Ure, Jon Richardson, Eliza Carthy, and Two Door Cinema Club.
