Whitby Pavilion
Whitby Pavilion Complex, nestling into the West Cliff, has wonderful views over the North Sea.
About Whitby Pavilion
Built in 1878 the theatre is well equipped with up-to-date sound and lighting facilities, yet retains the wonderful atmosphere of its Victorian origins. Having undergone refurbishment the stalls are now removable, providing space for a dance hall, thus enabling the theatre to be used as it was in the 1940s. The theatre is a traditional proscenium arch with seating for up to 380, this accommodation is made up of 236 seats in the stalls, (of which four are wheelchair access spaces), while the remainder of the seating comprises the tiered circle. The intimate and cosy bar area has extensive sea views and makes a perfect meeting place before a show and is always popular afterwards. The theatre is home to a wide and varied mix of entertainment including plays; traditional drama, pantomimes, musicals and comedy. Concerts, tribute shows, music hall and variety shows ensure that audiences of all ages will find something they enjoy. The venue itself is popular with touring companies and performers who enjoy visiting here.
Digital Cinema
Thanks to funding from the UK Film Council & Screen Yorkshire, Whitby's residents and holiday makers now have regular access to a modern digital cinema experience. The cinema, Cine Yorkshire's first digital host venue, has been a smash hit with local and visitor audiences. With the most up to date technology now available to us, we now screen some of the biggest new blockbusters alongside great cinematic classics.
The Northern Lights Suite
This light and airy room has spectacular sea views, one of the finest dance floors in the region and an integral bar. With its own stage, sound and lighting system and access to modern dressing room facilities, this is Whitby's largest function venue accommodating up to a thousand people for entertainment events. Regular weekly events run throughout the year including Ballroom and Sequence Dancing, Classical Music, Brass Band and Choir concerts and children's theatre workshops. Entertainments are provided by the Pavilion and also outside promoters who hire the venue. The flexibility of this room is endless. With the use of different seating styles and table layouts a formal dinner can be set for 400 people, a concert for 700 people and an informal concert with a dance floor and cabaret style seating for a maximum of 600 people. Minimal seating enables the capacity of 1000 people to be reached for large entertainments events. Alternative layouts are also used for exhibitions and trade fairs, dance festivals and children's events. The catering facilities available alongside the Northern Lights suite offer menus suitable for, conferences and meetings, wedding receptions and dinner functions, evening buffets and hot food for late night events. Recently licensed for civil ceremonies you can now marry and hold your wedding breakfast and evening reception all under one roof, with stunning sea views for the backdrop, the Northern Lights suite is the perfect wedding venue.
Exhibition Hall
Complementing the two main areas, the Pavilion Theatre and the Northern Lights suite; the versatility of the Pavilion is further enhanced through the undercroft area. An adaptable space that is situated directly below the Northern Lights suite it has its own self-contained access and is also accessible from the main complex. With a capacity of 360 people the undercroft can be used in conjunction with other parts of the complex or for sports activities, craft fairs, exhibitions or anything else you can think of, and with its sports flooring is the ideal place for children's parties. Regular mid-week events run throughout the year including Fit Tots and Art Tots; parent and toddler groups run by InterActive, and also the Whitby Whalers University of the Third Age hold fitness classes weekly in term time.
