There are other stops located further outside the town, for example Leyburn Shawl is approximately 5 – 10 minutes stroll from the marketplace.

Leyburn was mentioned in the Doomesday book but had no recorded population. The name Leyburn comes from the Old English and means “clearing by the stream”.

When should you visit Leyburn?

Leyburn is an ideal destination to visit throughout the year. In spring and summer, visitors can enjoy the town and the surrounding areas, with flowers in bloom and opportunities to enjoy the walks in the surrounding area.

In autumn and winter, you will avoid busy crowds but soak in the atmosphere and still be able to enjoy the sites. If you visit in November and December, you will be able to enjoy Leyburn as the town builds up to the festive season.

What pretty villages are near Leyburn?

Leyburn is located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales national park and is surrounded by the many pretty villages that make up Wensleydale. Nearby you can see Middleham, famous for its Castle and horseracing. You also have smaller villages of Wensley and Harmby, both with their own pictureqsue waterfalls. You can also find West and East Witton, with East Witton located close to the beautiful and atmospheric Jervaulx Abbey. Further afield you can stop at Aysgarth, famous for its stunning waterfalls and perfect for riverside walks.
