Leyburn Shawl

Perched on the southern edge of the market town, Leyburn Shawl is one of Wensleydale’s most distinctive natural landmarks that offers sweeping views across the Yorkshire Dales. Stretching for around a mile, the Shawl forms a dramatic green terrace above Leyburn, where open pasture, wildflowers and dry-stone walls meet far-reaching vistas of the valley below.

Steeped in local folklore, the Shawl is said to have been created by Mary Queen of Scots, who, legend has it, dropped her shawl while escaping captivity. Whether fact or fiction, the name has endured, lending a sense of romance and intrigue to this much-loved viewpoint.

Today, the Shawl is a favourite with walkers, photographers and nature lovers. A path runs along its length, making it an accessible stroll with views over Wensleydale, Penhill and the surrounding countryside. Seasonal highlights include spring wildflowers, grazing sheep and some of the best sunset views in the area.

Planning your visit

Access: The Shawl is easily reached on foot from Leyburn town centre, with several paths leading from the marketplace and nearby streets.

Parking: Parking is available in Leyburn, with a short uphill walk to the ridge.

Terrain: Paths can be uneven and exposed, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Family & pets: Suitable for families; dogs are welcome but should be kept under control around livestock.
