Experience the night sky
North Yorkshire boasts two renowned National Parks, Yorkshire Dales National Park and North York Moors National Park, with both designated as International Dark Sky Reserves. These parks offer numerous designated viewing spots where you can marvel at the wonders of the universe. With clear night skies, you can witness constellations, planets, and even the Milky Way stretching across the horizon.
Immerse yourself in Dalby Forest Stargazing Events, learn to identify constellations and pick up expert tips on photographing the night sky - a must for budding astronomers and night-sky dreamers.
Book a Dark Skies Experience at Sutton Bank, Dark Sky Discovery Site. Officially recognised for its low light pollution and wide horizons, Sutton Bank National Park is a true night-sky paradise.

Dark Skies Fringe Festival

North Yorkshire celebrates its stunning night skies with an annual Dark Skies Fringe Festival. This event brings together experts, families, and curious minds to enjoy a range of activities. From guided stargazing sessions and astronomy talks to hands-on workshops for children, the festival is a fantastic way to learn more about the cosmos while enjoying the beauty of the region.
Embark on a series of night walks through some of North Yorkshire’s most breathtaking landscapes, including Robin Hood’s Bay, the Hole of Horcum, Clay Bank, Helmsley, and Sutton Bank National Park Centre, with each location offering a unique perspective of the star-filled sky above. For those keen to capture the beauty of the night sky, book an immersive astrophotography workshop, available in Whitby and Ampleforth Abbey.

Stargazing tips
The key to great stargazing? Darkness. Look for locations away from the glare of lights and busy roads. You don’t need to trek into the wilderness, just find a place with minimal artificial lighting and a wide, unobstructed view of the sky. Our Dark Sky discovery sites are perfect.
Clear skies are a must. Before heading out, check a reliable weather app to ensure cloud cover won’t spoil your plans. For an extra treat, time your outing with a meteor shower or, if you are lucky, a chance of seeing the Northern Lights!
Stargazing is a slow, peaceful activity, and your eyes need time to adjust to the dark. You might be outside for a while, so layer up! Bring blankets, warm drinks, and easy-to-grab snacks. A dim red torch is perfect for navigating without ruining your night vision.
