Itinerary Schedule
A morning exploring Malton
Before you dive into all things coastal, Malton makes the perfect stop on your way to your accommodation - ideal for a coffee fix and a bite to eat! Known as the town of makers and creators, its streets are lined with artisan shops and independent food specialists, where you’ll find everything from handmade treats to locally sourced produce. Choose from a variety of cosy cafés and welcoming breakfast spots while soaking in the town’s atmosphere - a wonderful way to set yourself up for the adventures ahead.
Lunch in Thornton-le-Dale
Just a short drive from Malton you’ll find Thornton‑le‑Dale. As we know, a trip away means indulging in food at every opportunity, so this is a great place to park up, grab a bite and explore. The village is picture‑perfect, with its beckside walks and iconic thatched cottages - most famously Beck Isle Cottage, often said to be one of the most photographed cottages in England. It’s a scene straight out of a fairytale and a must‑see stop before continuing your journey.
Check-in to Cliff House Holiday Cottages
After Thornton‑le‑Dale, continue just a short drive down the road to Ebberston, where your accommodation at Cliff House Holiday Cottages awaits. Once you’ve checked in, take time to settle in for the evening. You might enjoy a dip in the pool before unwinding by the fire in the living room. With the comfort of self‑catering, you can choose to prepare a cosy meal in your cottage or head out to a local pub for a hearty dinner - a wonderful way to round off your first day and relax before setting out to explore the coast tomorrow.
Discover the seaside town of Scarborough
From your base in Ebberston, Scarborough is just a short journey away - around 20–25 minutes by car along the A17. Once in town, you’ll also find plenty of parking options near the seafront and town centre. If you prefer public transport, the 128 bus route conveniently stops in Ebberston and takes you straight into Scarborough.
Spend the day uncovering Scarborough’s highlights: explore its museums and galleries for a spot of culture, wander the stunning South Cliff Gardens for lovely views over the coastline or head to Peasholm Park for a stroll around the boating lake. For aerial views, walk to the castle for sweeping views across the headland, or take in a show at the town's iconic art deco theatre. With so many great places to eat and drink, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to coffee and lunch spots. From cafés for light bites and welcoming restaurants to the seaside staple of fish and chips, there’s something for every taste. Don't miss out on an ice cream, it's a coastal tradition no matter the weather!
If you are visiting in the colder months dogs are also welcome on the beach, making it a perfect spot for a bracing seaside walk wrapped up warm. As evening falls, return to your cottage for a cosy night in, ready to continue your beach hopping adventure tomorrow.
Filey adventures and journey home
The next morning, head back towards the coast, venturing a little further this time to the traditional seaside town of Filey. With its sweeping bay and relaxed atmosphere, Filey is perfect for a slower pace of exploration. Stroll along the promenade, enjoy the all‑year‑round dog‑friendly beach, or walk out to Filey Brigg - a striking natural headland rich in history and geology. If you’d like to explore further, nearby villages such as Hunmanby or Cayton Bay provide quiet coastal experiences, ideal for those seeking a more tranquil stop‑off.
After soaking up the seaside charm, it’s time to head home, taking with you fond memories of North Yorkshire’s coast and countryside.
Additional adventures nearby
If you have an extra day to spare, there are plenty of nearby options to enjoy before heading home. Pickering offers a charming market town atmosphere and is the starting point of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway - perfect for a nostalgic steam train ride through the countryside. The Yorkshire Wolds provide rolling hills, walking trails, and picturesque villages, ideal for those seeking a quieter rural escape. Or venture to the coastal gems a little further up the shoreline, such as Robin Hood’s Bay and Ravenscar, which offer dramatic scenery and rich history: Robin Hood’s Bay with its winding streets and smuggler tales and Ravenscar with its sweeping clifftop views across the North Sea. Both sit along the Cleveland Way National Trail, making them excellent stops for walkers who want to experience part of this iconic coastal route - if only for a few hours.
