Head to Talbot Food Yard where you can pick up delightful macarons, homemade bread, freshly brewed coffee and delicious homemade ice cream. Stretch your legs with a walk up to Orchard Fields, the site of a former Roman fort, and continue into the former castle grounds, where serene gardens and woodland offer a peaceful escape. In spring, keep an eye out for the rabbits grazing beneath the trees.

If you fancy more history, just two miles north of Malton, and easily accessible by bus, you’ll find an open-air museum set within a former POW camp, offering an immersive look into wartime history with engaging displays that bring stories to life.

Does Malton have a market day?

A traditional market is held each Saturday in Malton Market Place between 9am – 2:30pm with a range of stalls from art and gifts to fresh fruit and local produce.

Monthly Arts and Crafts markets are held between March and December, usually on the last Saturday of the month alongside the Traditional Market.

Livestock auctions are also held on Tuesday and Friday in the auction mart above The Shambles.

Is Malton good for shopping?

Absolutely, Malton is great for shopping. The town is known for its fantastic local producers, so you can pick up everything from small batch gin and beer brewed in town to delicious handmade macarons. Is Malton a walkable town?

Yes, very. Malton is pedestrian friendly with ample parking, so you can easily leave the car and explore on foot. Wander along the high street and surrounding roads - Castlegate, Yorkersgate and Wheelgate - as well as the Market Place. It’s hard to get lost here!

What are the best walks to do from Malton?

Malton and St Mary’s Priory Walk is a popular 3 mile circular route, usually taking around 2–3 hours at an easy pace. The walk features scenic stretches along the River Derwent, Old Malton to St Mary’s Priory Church, founded as a Gilbertine Priory in the 12th Century, and on to Orchard Fields.

Enjoy a stretch of the Centenary Way, an 83 mile route from York to Filey Brigg, with key sections passing through or near Malton. The trail runs through some of the area’s most beautiful landscapes, including Howardian Hills scenery, peaceful riverside paths and historic highlights like Kirkham Priory, which the route passes directly.
