About This Itinerary

If you are looking for a weekend or mid-week getaway where you can indulge your love of food, then North Yorkshire has much to offer. Book a stay in the dales and you will taste sumptuous fine dining, sample locally produced fare and even have a go at creating your own culinary masterpieces.

Day 1: afternoon – check into your accommodation

Swinton Park Hotel

Book into your accommodation at Swinton Park Hotel, a Grade II* castle set in sweeping grounds amidst stunning countryside. Each room is beautifully decorated and for added grandeur stay in one of the Signature Suites. The Turret which is situated over 3 floors of the castle turret offers spectacular views. The Terrace Bar is open until late so you can enjoy a nightcap after you return from your evening meal.

Day 1: evening – country pub fare

Grantley Arms

Head to the Grantley Arms, a traditional pub where you will receive a warm Yorkshire welcome. Enjoy a pint in the bar when you arrive while you browse the food menus. The seasonal menus are created with a farm to fork philosophy and use the best local Yorkshire ingredients and produce overseen by Chef Patron, Gavin Swift from Grantley Hall, the pub’s sister hotel.

The Grantley Arms serves food and drinks from Wednesday evening through to Sunday.

Day 2 – up your culinary skills

Swinton Cookery School

Spend the day learning new skills or brushing up on your culinary techniques with a full day cookery course. Lead by chef tutor, Ian Matfin, the course will take you through everything you need to know to be able to create beautiful dishes. Many of the ingredients are sourced from the estate, including from the walled garden. There are lots of courses to choose from including breadmaking, chocolate, Mexican cuisine and world street food.

Day 3: morning - discover cheese heaven

Wensleydale Creamery

Head up to Hawes to the Wensleydale Creamery where you will learn how the cheese beloved by Wallace is made. Book onto a Cheese Experience and discover 1000 years of cheesemaking in this part of North Yorkshire through a live demonstration. Try cheese samples in the ‘Taste of Yorkshire’ tasting room and watch the cheesemakers producing the many Wensleydale varieties.

Day 3: afternoon – afternoon tea with a difference

Calvert's Restaurant at Wensleydale Creamery

After your Cheese Experience, indulge in a Cheesy Afternoon Tea in Calvert’s Restaurant. Savour a platter of cheesy treats in a twist on the traditional sandwiches and cakes. Afterwards browse the shop and buy some Wensleydale cheese and accompaniments to take home with you.

Day 3: evening – visit the highest pub in the UK

Tan Hill Inn

Travel across remote moorland dotted with sheep to the highest pub in the UK. As the lights come into view you are promised a cosy evening with lovely food and ale and friendly company. The bar always has a roaring fire in the wintertime ready to warm you up. Choose one of the hearty pub classics on the menu before sitting back to relax and enjoy your evening with the Yorkshire locals.
