Where is Thirsk?

Thirsk is located in the centre of North Yorkshire, as area called the Vale of Mowbray that lies between the hills of Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors National Parks.  The county town of Northallerton is approximately 8 miles to the north, and Boroughbridge is 8 miles south.

What to expect

Thirsk is a small market town and is easy to explore on foot. Most of the shops, restaurants, cafes and bars are located around the Market Place, a cobbled square in the town centre, and on streets leading immediately off the square.

Thirsk is home to museums, galleries and gardens that will allow you to delve deeper into the town’s history.

Where can I get information in Thirsk?

Thirsk has a tourist information centre in the Market Place, which is run by a team of passionate volunteers. The information centre has a range of leaflets, information and some souvenirs available to purchase.

When is Thirsk Market 

The market in Thirsk is held every Monday and Saturday, including Bank Holidays.   The market takes place along the cobbled streets in the very heart of the town.

Getting to Thirsk

By Rail: Thirsk has a Railway Station with regular services from Newcastle and York. It should be noted Thirsk station is on the edge of the town, 30 minutes walk to town centre.

By Bus: There are regular buses to Thirsk that stop in the Market Place from York, Northallerton and Ripon.

By Car: Thirsk is easy to get to by car. It is approximately 20 minutes from the A1M, and the A19 runs directly by the town.

There is limited short-stay parking in the centre of town in the Market Place however there are long stay car parks a short walk from the town centre.

There is rapid electric vehicle charging in Millgate Car Park.
