Stump Cross Caverns

Welcome to Stump Cross Caverns - Hidden beneath Greenhow Hill, between Pateley Bridge and Grassington, Stump Cross Caverns has been welcoming visitors since lead miners discovered it in 1860. Today it's run by two generations of the Bowerman family, and our visitors tell us the friendly family atmosphere is what they remember most.
Whatever your age, whatever the weather, Stump Cross is always an adventure.

Exploring the Caves

Wander through twisting passageways, past stalactites, stalagmites and glittering crystal formations shaped over thousands of years. The standard tour is self-guided,
so you can take your time and explore at your own pace. Allow around 40 to 50 minutes. A free audio guide brings the story of the caves to life, and a range of quizzes
are included in all children's tickets.
The caves stay at 7°C all year round, so bring a warm layer. Hard hats are provided.

● Fossil digs, Crystal and Space workshops for young explorers
● The UV Cave Experience, where the caverns glow under ultraviolet light

Ice Age Discoveries

The caves hold a remarkable record of prehistoric life. Remains of Ice Age animals, including wolverine, have been found here, and excavation work with a local potholing club continues today to open the new C chamber in 2028.. In Spring/Summer, our Ice Age Dig lets explorers aged 5 and over sift through genuine glacial mud from the excavation in search of their own finds.

Food, Shopping and Facilities

Refuel at the Time Café with homemade food, afternoon teas and views across the
Dales. Our crystal gift shop is packed with gemstones, fossils and crystals from around
the world, plus educational gifts for curious minds. Free parking is available, and we
also offer motorhome pitches if you'd like to stay and explore the area.

School Visits

We hold the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge and offer school trips linked to the Key Stage 2 curriculum, covering the Stone Age, fossils, rocks and
prehistoric animals.

Good to Know

● Entry and exit is via 65 steps, with no lift. Some areas have low ceilings, narrow passages and uneven floors
● There is no wheelchair access on site
● Wear warm clothes, and wellies or waterproof boots after heavy rain or snow
● Front baby carriers only. Back carriers and rucksacks aren't allowed in the caves
● Dogs are welcome in the visitors' centre, café and shop, but not into the caves.
● Toilets are in the visitors' centre (there are none underground)
