Shandy Hall

Shandy Hall is a popular place to visit for many reasons.

Though many make a pilgrimage to the literary shrine of Laurence Sterne, Shandy Hall is a fascinating Historic House and Garden with much else to enjoy.

Shandy Hall is an Accredited Museum, and feedback shows that the House tours are an enjoyable introduction to Laurence Sterne and Tristram Shandy. It was one of the film locations for Michael Winterbottom’s ‘A Cock and Bull Story’ starring Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon and Stephen Fry.

The Grade 1 listed house is originally medieval, with an extraordinary architectural history. It has been lived in continuously since at least 1430.

The two acres of Gardens include a woodland garden in an old quarry. Wildlife is central to gardening activity at Shandy Hall, and we aim to please our human visitors too. The garden has a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Gold Award for wildlife gardening. We are happy to chat about this and encourage others to apply.

A small shop sells a wide variety of good quality books, postcards and other gifts, new and second hand, and there is a good selection of plants for sale in peat-free compost and recyclable pots.

Closed Mondays and Tuesdays except Bank Holiday Mondays.
