About Runswick Bay Cottages
Runswick Bay Cottages is located in the quiet former fishing village of Runswick Bay on the North Yorkshire coast. Just 8 miles north of Whitby and just 2 miles south of Staithes, the village is perfectly located for exploring this fantastic Jurassic coastline, for walkers discovering the Cleveland Way or those seeking a quiet retreat. With just 90 cottages, the village is a quiet retreat with many properties used as second homes and very few holiday rentals.
If you're lucky enough to stay here, you will soon learn that the village is full of history. The traditional fishing cobles can be seen departing early each morning, bringing back their daily catch during the Summer months, either lobsters and crabs or the bounty provided by their nets and rods. Lights can be see dotted around the waters edge in the evening as fisherman cast from the beach at night.
We have over 15 handpicked cottages to choose from sleeping 2 up to 8, mostly pet friendly and all include bedlinen, towels and WiFi. You can easily spend a day exploring the pathways of Runswick Bay or a day down the beach. The best thing to do is to grab a takeaway sandwich from Sandside cafe, take a windbreak (the cafe sells them) and grab your plot on the beach for the day. 'Barefoot Kayak' rent out paddleboards and kayaks in the Summer months and supply wetsuits, lifejackets and basic instruction if you're a novice. The RNLI Lifeguards operate between June and September on our beach, so always keep an eye on their daily tide and safety notices.
Our local pub, The Royal is full of friendly staff, wholesome food and a great selection of Gins, Wines and Beers. In the colder months, their roaring fire is a great place to sit near with a hot chocolate and a slice of cake. At the top of the bank, we have the Runswick Bay Hotel, our other pub with a restaurant. While offering a daily menu, they also offer breakfasts for non-residents (you must book beforehand). It's very handy to pop in here for a drink if you're ever waiting for the bus as you can sit outside and watch it arrive in good time before you head for the bus stop!
Our local bus service is good. The X4 Arriva bus service generally runs every hour and with free WiFi and leather seats, the ride is a pleasant one to Whitby which is 8 miles south of Runswick Bay or Saltburn to the north. 2 miles away in Staithes, you will find a supermarket with a cash point, coffee machine and lottery. They have newspapers and a good selection of everything you will need for your stay.
