Nunnington Hall – National Trust
A picturesque 17th century manor on the River Rye, featuring organic walled gardens, period rooms and the unique Carlisle Collection of miniature rooms, plus seasonal art exhibitions.
About Nunnington Hall – National Trust
Set beside the peaceful River Rye, Nunnington Hall is an atmospheric historic house in north Yorkshire, blending over 450 years of evolution with tranquil organic gardens, family trails and activities, and inspiring exhibitions. Managed by the National Trust, this mellow 17th century manor offers a rich mix of heritage, nature and culture for visitors of all ages.
A house with centuries of stories
The present Nunnington Hall combines 17th and 18thcentury features, shaped by generations of owners who extended and remodelled the property to suit their times. Inside, you’ll discover panelled halls, elegant period rooms and the much loved Carlisle Collection - a remarkable series of fully furnished miniature rooms showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and tiny working instruments. The Hall, as it’s presented today reflects how it appeared during the 1920s, when the Fife family undertook major renovations before gifting it to the National Trust in 1952.
Alongside these domestic spaces, seasonal exhibitions of art and photography bring fresh energy throughout the year, making every visit slightly different.
Beautiful organic gardens
Nunnington’s sheltered walled garden is a highlight for many visitors. Lined with colourful borders, heritage orchards, wildflower meadows, rose gardens and peaceful lawns, it's a serene place to relax or enjoy as part of a longer walk in the surrounding Howardian Hills. As one of the first National Trust gardens to move to fully organic practices, you can see traditional and modern horticultural methods in action from composting systems to wildlife friendly planting.
Spring brings crocuses and daffodils along the riverbank, summer fills the air with blossom and roses, and autumn celebrates the orchard harvest with fruit in abundance and seedheads holding shape in the borders.
A family friendly day out
Families will find plenty to enjoy, including children’s trails during school holidays and the Lion’s Den natural play area and bird hide set within the grounds. Inside hands on activities help younger visitors relax and perhaps discover a part of the estate’s history or art in fun accessible ways through colouring-in, board games and stories.
Tea Room and visitor facilities
After exploring the hall and gardens, visitors can relax in the Tea Rooms or the outdoor Tea Garden, which serve hot drinks, cakes and light meals with gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options available. A second hand bookshop is perfect for browsing before finding a sunny deckchair in the garden.
