Yorkshire Three Peaks Guided Challenge

From Hike Yorkshire

Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in a single day. Take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks with ex-military guides who handle the navigation, pacing and safety, so you can focus on the 24 miles and the views.

About This Experience

The Challenge

The Yorkshire Three Peaks is one of Britain's great walking challenges: Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in a single day. It covers around 24 miles with roughly 1,585 metres of climbing, and most walkers aim to finish within 12 hours. It is tough, rewarding and unforgettable.

The Route

Starting in Horton-in-Ribblesdale, the route climbs the limestone steps of Pen-y-ghent before the long crossing to Ribblehead Viaduct, the Victorian railway landmark at the halfway point. From there it climbs Whernside, the highest of the three, then passes through Chapel-le-Dale before the final ascent of Ingleborough's broad summit plateau and the long descent back to Horton.

Why Walk With a Guide

Our guides served in the British Army and Royal Marines, and navigation, first aid and looking after people on the hill are second nature to them. They set a steady, sustainable pace, make the calls on weather and route, and keep the group together, while sharing the geology, history and wildlife of the Dales along the way.

Charity and Group Challenges

The Three Peaks is a popular fundraising challenge, and we guide groups of friends, charities and companies. We are happy to talk through training, logistics and timings before you commit to a date.

A Day Off the Grid

Phone signal is patchy across much of the route, and for many walkers that becomes part of the appeal: twelve hours of walking, conversation and big Dales views.

Good to Know

This is a hard, full day suited to regular walkers with good fitness. We recommend completing at least one long hill walk of around 15 miles beforehand. Expect an early morning start. You will need walking boots, waterproofs, warm layers, plenty of food, at least three litres of water and a head torch. Horton-in-Ribblesdale has a pay and display car park and a station on the Settle to Carlisle railway.
