About This Experience
Learn to Read the Woods
Most people walk straight past what is growing under their feet. On this two hour beginners' course you learn how fungi live in a woodland, which trees they partner with, and how that tells you where to look. By the end, a walk in the woods will never look the same again.
What You'll Learn
How to read a woodland and recognise the habitats where particular mushrooms grow. How to identify common Yorkshire species in the places they actually grow, rather than from a book. How to tell edible species from the toxic lookalikes that catch people out. And, most importantly, what makes an identification certain rather than merely likely, and when to walk away from a specimen.
Your Guide
The course is led by Ryan, founder of Hike Yorkshire, who spent six years in the Royal Marines and has been foraging since childhood. Small groups, so everyone gets proper time with the guide.
Two Hours Off the Grid
No screens and no apps, just the woods, a basket and a good eye. It is an absorbing, unhurried way to switch off and learn a skill that lasts a lifetime.
When It Runs
The autumn mushroom season runs from September to the end of November, weather permitting. Spring dates are being added soon.

Good to Know
