About Filey Kite Festival
Filey Kite Festival 2025: A weekend of sky-high spectacle and coastal flavours
The skies above Filey are set to come alive once again as the much-anticipated Filey Kite Festival returns on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September 2025. Held at the scenic Filey Brigg Country Park, this free, family-friendly event promises a weekend of vibrant displays, community spirit, and coastal charm.
Now a firm favourite in the town’s events calendar, the festival draws kite enthusiasts and curious visitors alike to witness a dazzling array of kites soaring above the Yorkshire coast. From giant inflatable creatures to intricate, high-performance designs, the festival showcases the creativity and skill of some of the UK’s top kite flyers.
The event is hosted and commentated by the Northern Kite Group, who bring decades of experience and a passion for kite flying to the festival. Their commentary adds colour and context to the displays, helping visitors understand the techniques and stories behind the kites.
This year’s festival introduces a brand-new feature: a Learn to Fly Zone. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own kites and take advantage of expert guidance from seasoned flyers. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to improve your skills, this interactive area offers a unique opportunity to get hands-on with the sport.
Adding even more flavour to the weekend, the Filey Food Festival will once again run alongside the kite festival. This popular collaboration means visitors can enjoy not only the visual spectacle in the sky but also a rich variety of food and drink on the ground.
Expect a mouth-watering selection of hot meals, sweet treats, snacks, and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Whether you're in the mood for a hearty lunch, a refreshing drink, or something indulgent, the food festival offers something for every taste. Local traders and producers will be showcasing their best, making it a great opportunity to sample regional flavours and support small businesses.
The festival isn’t just about what’s happening in the sky. On the ground, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Children can enjoy traditional fairground rides, while adults can browse a variety of stalls offering crafts, gifts, and local produce.
One of the most beloved features of the festival is the Teddy Bear Drop. Children are invited to bring their favourite teddy bears and watch them take to the skies in a parachute drop. This charming activity takes place from the commentator gazebo between 12pm–1pm and 2pm–4pm, weather permitting. It’s a delightful way to add a touch of magic to the day and create lasting memories for younger visitors.
Practical Information
The festival runs from 10am to 4pm on both days and is free to attend. Parking is available at Filey Country Park, though charges will apply. Visitors are encouraged to bring picnic blankets, dress for the weather, and prepare for a day of outdoor enjoyment. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome, making it a perfect outing for the whole family.
As with any outdoor event, the programme is subject to weather conditions. Kite flying and the Teddy Bear Drop, in particular, depend on having suitable wind and dry skies. Organisers will provide updates if any changes are necessary, so it’s worth checking online before setting off.
