About Knaresborough Heritage Centre Talk - Knaresborough Forest, Foresters, and Nature - Knaresborough Methodist Church

Knaresborough Forest, Foresters, and Nature, A talk presented by Kathy Allday

700 years ago, royal hunting forests covered one third of England; the domain of kings; woe betide anyone who stole a deer! Knaresborough Forest was home to England’s biggest oak tree, various industries, and had strong connections to Knaresborough Castle and its governors.
This talk explores the evolution of Knaresborough Forest from the Normans to the Enclosure Act of 1770 with its social and economic consequences. It is about the people who lived, worked, and hunted in the forest. It looks at the historic sites, ancient woods and precious wildlife; the remains of the forest today. We explore why woodlands matter, the threats they face and why they need protecting for future generations.
