Visiting Malton

Situated between York and Scarborough, the popular market town of Malton is known for its countryside charm and artisan producers. Its Market Place has many cosy cafés, traditional pubs and unique retailers, all offering a warm welcome. Malton also benefits from excellent travel connections to the wider area and the Yorkshire coast.

Malton is on the edge of the Howardian Hills National Landscape, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The town is about 17 miles from York, 8 miles south of Pickering and 23 miles west of Scarborough on the Yorkshire coast. To the north you’ll find the North York Moors National Park, while the Yorkshire Wolds are to the east.

What to expect?

The town is compact and best explored on foot. Wander through the Market Place to discover independent shops selling clothing, homeware, books and gifts, along with a great selection of cafés, restaurants and pubs. You’ll also find local butchers and bakeries offering fresh produce to take home. Larger stores and supermarkets are available too.

Malton is a town of makers and creators, and many of them can be found at the Talbot Yard, where you can enjoy artisan delights including distilleries, an ice cream parlour and specialist bakeries serving delicious homemade treats. Several other streets such as Market Street and Wheelgate are also perfect for exploring, lined with shops, eateries and boutique stores.

For a deeper insight into local heritage, visit the town’s museum. There is a children’s play area opposite the bus station, and the town provides access to numerous walks of varying distances.

Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Malton is known for its horseracing connections, with many trainers and stables based in the area. The town also hosts a twice-weekly livestock market, reflecting its strong farming history.

By train

Malton is on the Manchester Victoria Line, calling at York, Huddersfield and, Dewsbury and Leeds with TransPennine Express services approximately every hour. The train continues to Seamer and Scarborough, offering easy access to the coast.

It’s a short walk from the town centre to the bus and train station, which sit adjacent to each other. There is a taxi rank at the train station, parking and bike storage is available, but it is limited.

By bus

Voted the most scenic bus route in the UK, the daily Coastliner 840 service travels from Leeds via Malton to Whitby, with hourly services travelling through the North York Moors National Park. The daily Coastliner 843 service travels from Leeds via Malton along the A64 to Scarborough hourly. A handy app provides live updates and bus location information for added convenience.

Local bus services include the 190 service operated by 21 Transport, which provides a Monday-Saturday route between Foxholes and Malton via villages including Weaverthorpe, Helperthorpe, and Norton.

The East Yorkshire Bus 81 Service runs Monday to Saturday between York and Malton, calling at Castle Howard and Welburn.

Ryedale Community Transport serves the rural villages around Malton including Nunnington and Foxholes with 16-seater minibuses; advanced booking is required.

By car

The A64 from York to Scarborough runs directly past Malton, while the A169 connects the town to Whitby and the North York Moors National Park via Pickering.

Where are the public toilets in Malton?

Public toilets, including disabled access and baby changing facilities, can be found in the Market Place behind St Michael’s Church, and next to Wentworth Street Car Park off Princess Road.

Parking

Two hours free parking is available in the central Market Place, Chancery Lane, Shambles Car Park, and weekends at Navigation Wharf (some restrictions apply on market days). Long stay parking is available at Wentworth Street and Water Lane car parks.
