Visiting Leyburn

Leyburn is a traditional, bustling market town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It has a large market square filled with independent shops and eateries.

Where is Leyburn?

Leyburn is located on a ridge to the north of the River Ure. It is in Wensleydale, one of the valleys in the Yorkshire Dales, and is just on the eastern boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is therefore considered a gateway town for exploring this region of the dales, particularly Wensleydale and Swaledale to the north.

What to expect

Leyburn is a small market town with a population of just over 2,400 and is easy to explore on foot.

Many of the shops, restaurants, cafés and bars are located around the Market Place, a square in the town centre, Commercial Square (a smaller market square opposite the Market Place) and on streets leading immediately off the Market Place.

When is Leyburn Market?

A market is held in the marketplace every Friday from 7am until 4pm, which features local produce, crafts and other household goods. Alongside this, Little Bird Artisan Markets also run additional markets on various weekends throughout the year, generally from 9am till 3pm.

Getting to Leyburn

By public transport

While there is no train station that links to the National Rail network, there are a number of regular bus services that serve Leyburn. Leyburn is easily accessible from Bedale, Ripon, Masham and Richmond via Hodgsons Buses, and the Wensleydale Flyer (Dales Buses) connects Leyburn to Northallerton, Bedale, Aysgarth, Bainbidge and Hawes at the weekend.

By car

Leyburn is easy to get to by car. It is only 20 minutes' drive from the A1(M). The A684 connects from Northallerton and goes onto the Lake District and runs directly through the town.

While you can park in the Market Place, it can be very busy. There is alternative parking behind the Market Place in Leyburn Long Stay Car Park which usually has plenty of space and is less than 5 minutes' walk to the main shops.

Where are the public toilets?

The public toilets in Leyburn are on Railway Street, near the marketplace. There is also a Changing Places Toilet located in the Long Stay Car Park, Golden Lion Yard, Leyburn.
