About Whitby Trail - Fish, Fangs and Fossils

This walk has been provided by Discovering Britain. Whitby is a pretty coastal town surrounded by the North York Moors. Generations of holidaymakers have fallen for its scenery, seafood and literary links with Dracula, but Whitby is literally a town with two sides. Cut in half by the River Esk, Whitby lies between two steep cliffs. This landscape reflects a split personality, a town that revels in contrasts – sea and land, day and night, wealth and poverty, life and death…This trail looks at some of the ‘dark’ and mysterious forces that have shaped Whitby long before a famous vampire sank his teeth into it.
