Whitby Beach
Whitby Beach is a sandy and rocky beach backed by high cliffs, stretching for miles and offering safe, clean waters for swimming. It is possible to walk along the beach between Whitby and Sandsend during low tide.
About Whitby Beach
Whitby Beach offers something for everyone. Blue flag waters for those who like a paddle, fascinating rock pools for those interested in the local marine life, spectacular cliffs steeped in geological history for the visiting explorers and clean sandy beaches for those who just let to relax in the sunshine and soak up the atmosphere. Of course you’ll also see the famous Whitby Abbey looking over the beach from the cliff tops above, a must-see attraction when you're visiting.
Please note the cliff lift is currently out of service.

- The beach is patrolled by an RNLI qualified lifeguard service during the summer season
- Dog restrictions apply to the south end of this beach between 1 May and 30 September
- Deckchair hire is available daily (weather permitting) from 30 April to 2 October

- What is there to do at Whitby Beach?
Whitby Beach is a long stretch of golden sand located close by to the town centre meaning quick access to nearby cafes and restaurants for ice cream and Fish and Chips. The beach offers deckchair and chalet hire and is the perfect place for exploring rockpools or making lot’s of sandcastles!
- How do I access Whitby Beach?
Whitby Beach is accessed from Pier Road via a ramp adjacent to the West Pier. The beach can also be accessed from West Cliff down the paths and ramps by Whitby Pavilion.
- Are dogs allowed on Whitby Beach?
Dog restrictions apply to this beach between 1 May and 30 September.
- Is there public toilets on Whitby Beach?
There are public toilets available at Whitby Beach Management Centre. Between 1 April to 31 October, the toilets are open 8am to 9pm and between 1 November to 31 March, the toilets are open 8am to 6pm.
- Where is the best place for parking to get to Whitby Beach?
Pavilion Drive and Pavilion Top are the closest car parks to Whitby Beach, however they have very limited amount of car parking spaces. The best car park to use would be the West Cliff Car Park which is a short walk to Whitby Beach.
- How long is the walk to Sandsend from Whitby Beach?
It is possible to walk from Whitby Beach to Sandsend but when the tide is out. This walk can take between 30 minutes to an hour depending on pace. Check tide times before doing this walk.
