South Cliff Dino Hunt
A family trail exploring Scarborough’s overlooked prehistoric evidence, featuring 160-million-year-old dinosaur footprints.
About South Cliff Dino Hunt
The South Cliff Dino Hunt is a new dinosaur-themed trail designed to help families explore some of Scarborough’s most remarkable and often overlooked prehistoric evidence.
Developed in collaboration with paleontologist Fossiliam (Dr Liam Herringshaw), the trail highlights genuine dinosaur footprints dating back over 160 million years. These traces, preserved in the local rocks, provide fascinating insight into a time when dinosaurs walked across what is now Scarborough.
What to expect
The trail offers a fun, self-guided experience for families, following established footpaths along the South Cliff. The route is approximately 1 mile in length and showcases a range of prehistoric features along the way.
How to take part
The Dino Hunt forms part of a children’s activity bag, which is available to purchase from the Rotunda Museum, Scarborough.
Important information
The trail is suitable for families, but children must be supervised by an adult at all times.
The trail follows established footpaths, but some areas may include slopes or uneven surfaces. Participants should check suitability based on individual needs.
Participants are also advised to be aware of sea conditions before and during their visit. Waves can break over the sea wall at Scarborough Spa and along the South Cliff, particularly during high tides and rough weather. Conditions can change quickly, and wave activity may be unpredictable.
For safety, visitors should keep a safe distance from the sea wall during these conditions, follow any on-site signage or guidance, and take extra care when walking near the coastline.
